A fine example from the celebrated zinc deposits of Lafayette County, this specimen features lustrous rhombohedral calcite crystals displaying broad, well-defined faces with a vitreous to pearly luster and excellent translucence. The dominant crystal is accompanied by several smaller rhombohedral crystals, creating an elegant cluster with wonderful compositional depth.
All arise from a matrix of dark, lustrous sphalerite dusted with fine granular druzy, providing a striking contrast that throws the gemmy calcite forms into sharp relief. A beautiful and representative cabinet piece from one of the Midwest's most historically significant mining districts.
